The Dillsboro Emergency  Unit Inc. was organized in September of 1964.  The Dillsboro Fire Dept loaned $750 to the Emergency Unit to help purchase an ambulance.  Mr. Clifford Knigga also donated a pony which was raffled off for over $1000.

In January of 1965 the unit repaid the Fireman's loan.  Mr Knigga donated two more ponies which were raffled the following year.

The unit's first ambulance was a 1957 Oldsmobile which was purchased for $780.  In May of 1966 the unit purchased a 1959 Cadillac for $1200 and trade in.  In June of 1969 the unit traded the 1959 Cadillac in and purchased a 1965 Cadillac for $4500 and trade.  The first ambulance was housed at Dale Wendelman's until a garage was rented from Charles Jewett.  The unit was kept there until it was moved to the new Town Hall / Firehouse in December of 1973.
